This week-end, after spending 3 week-ends inside, we want to move. So we rented a car to go to the South Shore (the coast between Boston and Cape Cod). First stop on the Quincy beach, from where we have a nice view of Boston. On the beach, the line of the hide tide is materialized by a frozen froth line !
We continue to follow the coast to Hull, a city at the end of a peninsula. We see Boston and the different harbor Islands. There are two surfers on the beach, we can't imagine the temperature of the water (knowing the air temperature is 0°C, I hope their wetsuits are very warm !)
Then we go towards the Scituate's lighthouse, which is at the end of a small peninsula with many houses on stilts. Then we drive at random in the streets, trying to stay along the coast. This is not easy, Americans have a knack for building the main street far from the coast and then many perpendicular one-ways without access to the sea. So after some U-turns we find out by chance the very beautiful Duxbury's beach.
Then we go to Plymouth, the "first" American city, that means the city where the Mayflower accosted, the ship of the first settlers (pilgrims who were running away from religious persecutions). We had already been in this city during our road trip in summer 2011, and we didn't keep great memories ... Indeed there is not many things to see, except the Plymouth Rock, whose the legend tells it is the first rock that the pilgrims touched. It is just a stone, protect by a small "temple" from classical inspiration. At least in summer we had seen the Mayflower 2, a reconstitution of the original ship, but it was put away during the Winter (because of renovation). Therefore we didn't stay a long time ...
Finishing the day we come back to Boston, and we stop in Quincy to see the sunset on the city. A nice day along the sea to get some fresh air !
