Dernier jour à New York ! On commence par se diriger vers la High Line, cette ancienne voie de chemin de fer aérienne réhabilitée en promenade pour les piétons. Les fleurs commencent timidement à sortir, il fait beau et bon, bref c’est idéal. On va ensuite au Chelsea Market, un marché intérieur très sympa. On y trouve toute sorte de choses : homards, charcuterie italienne, saucisses allemandes, épices… Après avoir fait le tour on se décide pour de délicieux hot-dogs, dans une vraie boucherie où on voit les bouchers découper la viande (c’est peut- être commun en France, mais c’est la première fois qu’on voit ça de notre côté de l’Atlantique !). On fait ensuite un tour dans Chelsea, où on trouve encore des Cast Irons buildings, qui accueillaient autrefois des grands magasins.

Last day in New York City ! We start by heading towards the High Line, this ancient air railway is now a nice place to have a walk. Flowers start to open slowly, the weather is nice, it's perfect. Then we go to Chelsea Market, a very pleasant inside market. There are many different things : lobsters, Italian ham, German sausages, spices ... After going around the market, we decide to eat delicious hot-dogs, in a true butcher's shop where we see butchers cut the meat (maybe this is common in France but it's the first time we see that on  this side of the Atlantique !). Then we have a walk in Chelsea, where there are Cast Irons building again, in which there used to be large department stores.

Pour finir le séjour, on fait un dernier tour dans le sud de Central Park, avec une jolie vue sur les gratte-ciels de midtown. On remonte ensuite la 5^ème avenue, celle des beaux magasins comme Cartier, Tiffany, Vuitton, etc… On y trouve aussi la Trump Tower, une des tours de Donald Trump (on en a déjà vu deux autres lors de notre séjours, mais apparemment il y en a d’autres…), mais celle-ci est particulière, c’est là que se trouve son superbe appartement… On ne s’en doutait pas avant de passer devant et de voir tous les camions de télévision devant. En ce 19 avril, c’est jour d’élection à NYC, donc tout le monde veut voir le candidat républicain…

To end our stay, we have a walk in the South of Central Park, with a nice view of Midtown's skyline. We go to the 5th avenue, the one with nice shops like Cartier, Tiffany, Vuitton, etc ... There is also the Trump Tower, one of  Donald Trump's towers (we already saw two of them during our stay, but it seems there are others ...), but this one is particular because it is where there is his apartment ... We didn't know this until we saw all TV trucks in front of the tower. It is April the 19th, and it is election day in New York State, therefore everybody want to see the republican candidate.

On retourne finalement vers notre hôtel récupérer nos valises, et c’est reparti pour 5h de bus vers Boston ! On aura bien apprécié ce séjour dans la grosse pomme, on a encore découvert plein de choses qu’on n’avait jamais vu !

At last we return to our hotel to take our luggage back, and again 5 hours bus to Boston ! We enjoyed a lot this stay in the Big Apple, we discovered so many things we had never seen !

Troisième journée à New York, on commence par une visite guidée des quartiers de Soho et Greenwich Village. La visite guidée est donnée par une expat’ française à New York, on découvre plein de choses très intéressantes et pour une fois je n’ai pas le nez dans le guide du routard ! On commence la visite à Washington square, un petit par au cœur de l’université NYU, avec un petit arc de triomphe et de jolis arbres en fleurs. On se promène ensuite dans Greenwich village, avec de jolies maisons sur 3 étages, et on passe devant l’immeuble de la série Friends. Ensuite direction Soho et ses Cast Iron Buildings : des bâtiments tout en fonte. A l’intérieur on trouve des galeries d’art ou des immenses lofts.

Third day in New York, we begin with a guided tour in the districts of Soho and Greenwich Village. The guided tour is done by a French expatriate who lives in New York. We discover many very interesting things and for the first time, I don't need to read my travel book during the visit. We start the visit at Washington square, a small park in the middle of New York University, with a small ''Arc de Triomphe" and beautiful trees with flowers. Then we walk in Greenwich Village, with beautiful 3-floor houses, and we go past the building from the sitcom Friend's.  Then we go towards Soho and his Cast Iron Buildings : buildings made of iron. Inside, there are art galeries or huge lofts. 

Après la visite on mange dans un petit restaurant mexicain (où Leonardo Dicaprio aurait ses habitudes, mais on ne l’a malheureusement pas vu…) et on finit par un très bon Cheesecake (Eileen Cheesecake) conseillé par notre guide. Au final on a bien apprécié cette visite guidée, je vous la conseille si vous êtes de passage à New York (des visites sont aussi proposées dans Brooklyn et Harlem, peut- être pour la prochaine fois !). On remonte ensuite en métro jusqu’au Flat Iron Building, un bâtiment connu pour sa forme particulière en ‘’ fer à repasser’’.

After the visit, we eat in a small mexican restaurant (where Leonardo Dicaprio would have its habits, but sadly we didn't see him ...) and we finish the meal with a very good cheesecake (Eileen Cheesecake) advised by our guide. We enjoyed this guided tour, I recommend it if you are in New York (others visits are proposed in Brooklyn and Harlem, maybe next time !). Then we take the subway to the Flat Iron Building, a famous building due to its particular Flat Iron shape.

Après une petite pause à l’hôtel on se dirige vers le Brooklyn Bridge, qu’on traverse de Manhattan à Brooklyn. On se retourne souvent pour prendre des jolies photos de la skyline. On va ensuite dans le quartier DUMBO pour Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, c’est-à-dire sous le pont de Manhattan. On a cette magnifique vue iconique du pont avec l’Empire State building derrière. On se promène ensuite dans le Brooklyn Bridge Park, un joli coin de verdure sous les ponts de Brooklyn et Manhattan, avec une jolie vue sur la skyline. On déguste une bonne glace chez Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, puis on profite du coucher de soleil. On reste jusqu’à la tombée de la nuit pour prendre des photos des buildings éclairés. 

After a small break in our hotel we head towards the Brooklyn Bridge, that we across from Manhattan to Brooklyn. We often turn back to take beautiful pictures of the Skyline. Then we go to the area of DUMBO for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. We have this wonderful view with the Empire State Building in the back. Then we walk in the Brooklyn Bridge Park, a nice green area under the bridges of Brooklyn and Manhattan, with a nice view on the skyline. We enjoy an ice cream at Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, then we enjoy the sunset . We stay until the night to take pictures of lit buildings.

Aujourd’hui on commence par se rendre tout au sud de Manhattan pour prendre le Staten Island Ferry. Ce ferry gratuit permet aux gens qui habitent sur l’île de Staten Island (un des ‘’quartiers’’ de New York) de se rendre rapidement (25 minutes) sur Manhattan. Pour nous c’est un moyen d’avoir une jolie vue sur les buildings de Lower Manhattan. A l’aller on a accès à la plateforme extérieure, ce qui nous permet de prendre de jolies photos. Arrivés sur Staten Island on sort du ferry, on fait le tour de la station pour revenir à l’embarquement, et on repart dans l’autre sens. Ce coup-ci pas d’accès à l’extérieur, on a bien fait d’en profiter à l’aller !

Today we start the day going to the South of Manhattan to take the Staten Island Ferry. This free ferry allows people who live on Staten Island (one of the 5 boroughs of New York) to go quickly (25 minutes) to Manhattan. For us, this is a way to watch a nice view of Lower Manhattan's skyscrapers. On the way to Staten Island, we have access to the outside platform, that allows us to take beautiful photos. When we arrive on Staten Island, we go out of the ferry, we go around the station to re-entry the ferry, and we return in the other direction. On the way back, we don't have a access to the outside platform, we have done well to enjoy the view on the first journey.

Puis on prend le métro pour un long trajet : on va tout au sud de Brooklyn, à Coney Island. Le métro est aérien pendant la moitié du trajet, donc les 50 minutes passent rapidement. Coney Island c’est la plage à New York ! Coney Island accueille aussi des parcs d’attraction depuis les années 1880, on y trouve en particulier le Cyclone, une des plus vieilles montagnes russes des Etats-Unis (elle a ouvert en 1927). Elle est encore en activité, donc on a fait un tour ! C’est plus long et plus intense que ça en a l’air ! On se remet ensuite de nos émotions avec un hot-dog à Nathan’s Famous, une enseigne de hot dog ouverte en 1916. Chaque 4 juillet elle organise un concours de celui qui mange le plus de hot dog en 10 minutes. Le record est de 69 hot-dogs, on a regardé une vidéo du concours sur youtube, ça donne pas envie ! La promenade a été agréable, c’est complètement insolite de trouver un tel lieu à moins de 1h du centre-ville de New York !

Then we take the subway for a long ride : we are going to the south of Brooklyn, to Coney Island. The subway is aerial for half of the journey, therefore the 50 minutes last quickly. At Coney Island, we find the beach in New York City ! Coney Island also hosts amusement parks since the 1880's. In particular, we find the Cyclone, one of the oldest roller coasters in the USA (it opened in 1927). It is still open, therefore we took a ride ! It is longer and more intense than expected ! Then we eat a hot-dog at Nathan's Famous, a shop open since 1916. Every 4th of July, it organizes a competition : the one who eats the most hot-dogs in 10 minutes. The record is 69 hot-dogs, we watched a video of this contest on Youtube, it's disgusting ! The walk was nice, it was completely unusual to find a place like that less than 1 hour from the center of New York City !

On rentre ensuite à Manhattan, direction le memorial du 11 septembre. On y est déjà passé lors de nos précédentes visites, mais j’ai vu sur le compte instagramme de quelques blogueuses new-yorkaises (NewYork Off Road  et d'une pomme à l'autre)  qu’on pouvait rentrer dans l’Oculus, la nouvelle gare qui ressemble à une arête de poisson (ou un squelette de stégosaure…) Mais quand on arrive devant, tout semble encore en travaux. On fait le tour, on cherche un peu mais je commence à me dire qu’on ne peut pas y rentrer… Je demande à un agent dans une guérite d’information touristique, qui nous explique qu’il faut rentrer dans une des tours non terminées, puis descendre dans les souterrains. On est un peu sceptique, mais bon on essaie. On se retrouve donc dans des souterrains en travaux, avec personne à part des agents de sécurité qui nous regardent passer sans broncher… Et enfin on y arrive ! Ben c’est grand, et c’est blanc ! On s’amuse à prendre quelques photos, puis on continue dans les souterrains pour ressortir dans la grande tour de One World Trade Center (la plus haute tour de New York).

Then we come back to Manhattan, to the 9/11 memorial. We have already been there during our last visits, but I saw on some New York bloggers's Instagram accounts (New York Off Road and d'une pomme à l'autre)  that we could enter in the Oculus, the new train station which looks like a fishbone (or a Stegosaure's skeleton ...). But when we arrive in front of it, everything seems still in construction work. We turn around, we search a little but I start to think we can't go inside ... I ask an agent in a tourist information point, he explains to us that we need to enter a building still in construction, then go downstairs in underground passages. We are doubtful but we try. We arrive in underground passages still in construction, with no one except security guards looking at us without a move ... And at last we find it ! It's big and white ! We take some pictures, then we continue on underground passages to find an exit in the One World Trade Center's Tower (the highest tower of New York City).

On reprend ensuite le métro, direction le Flat Iron  Building, un bâtiment triangulaire en forme de fer à repasser. Pour finir la journée, on va voir un spectacle à Broadway ! On avait réservé nos places à l’avance, on va voir les Misérables. On est très bien placés sur le balcon, le spectacle est grandiose ! Les chanteurs sont très doués, et la musique est jouée en direct par un orchestre. On a vraiment adoré !

We take the subway again, to the Flat Iron Building, a triangular building with the shape of a flatiron. To finish the day, we go and see a show at Broadway ! We booked our tickets in advance, we are going to see Les Misérables. Our seats are very well located, the show is grandiose ! Singers are gifted, and music is played by a live orchestra. We really enjoyed it !

Ce lundi est férié, on profite donc de ce long week-end pour partir à New York. Départ le vendredi soir en bus et pour la première fois on utilise la compagnie Megabus : des bus colorés à deux étages, avec wifi et prise de courant. A cause des embouteillages d'un vendredi soir sur Boston, d’un accident et de travaux on arrive avec deux heures de retard à New York. La ville correspond bien à la description ‘’ qui ne dort jamais’’, puisqu’on a même le droit à un embouteillage à l’arrivée alors qu’il est près de minuit… On marche 10 minutes jusqu’à notre hôtel super bien situé près de Penn Station.

Le lendemain on se lève de bonne heure pour arriver avant la foule au Top of the Rock (plateforme d’observation en haut d’un building du Rockfeller Center). Sous un soleil magnifique, et avec tout de même un peu de monde, on profite de la vue magnifique sur Central Park d’un côté, et l’Empire State building de l’autre.

This Monday is a public holiday, we take advantage of this long week end to go to New York City. We leave Friday evening by bus and for the first time we use the Megabus company : colorful double-deck buses, with wifi and power outlets. Due to usual Friday evening traffic in Boston, an accident and road works, we arrive in NYC 2 hours late. The surname of NYC : "the city that never sleeps" is true because we even have a traffic-jam in the city although it is nearly midnight ... We walk 10 minutes to our hotel which is very well located close to Penn Station. The next day we wake up early to arrive before the crowd at the Top of the Rock (an observation platform at the top of one of the Rockfeller Center's building). Under a radiant sun, and even with some tourists, we enjoy the magnificent view on Central Park on one side, and the Empire State building the other side.

On redescend ensuite sur la terre ferme, et on fait un tour dans le quartier de Midtown, le quartier situé juste au sud de Central Park, où on trouve certains des buildings les plus iconiques de Manhattan : Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, mais aussi la gare Grand Central Station. On entre dans un superbe palace : le Waldorf Astoria, avec un très joli hall Art Déco et des toilettes plus grand que notre appartement… On finit la balade par une petite pause dans le très joli Bryant Park, entouré de gratte-ciels.

Then we come back on the ground and we have a walk in Midtown area, the district located just South of Central Park, where we find some of the most iconic buildings of Manhattan : Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, but also Grand Central Station. We enter in a superb palace : the Waldorf Astoria, with a very nice Art Deco style hall and restrooms bigger than in our apartment ... We end the walk with a little break in the very nice Bryant Park, surrounded by skyscrapers.

L’après-midi on se dirige vers Central Park. On commence par le American Museum of Natural History, un très joli musée à l’américaine. Puis petite balade dans Central Park autour du Lac (où des tortues profitent du soleil), jusqu’à Bethesda Fountain (ce n’est pas encore la saison des mariages, donc on ne voit pas de mariés en train de se faire prendre en photo, mais tout de même quelques couples prennent la pause avec des professionnels…) et pour finir la statue d’Alice au Pays des merveilles (comme d’habitude prise d’assaut par des enfants).

The afternoon we take the direction of Central Park. We start with the American Museum of Natural History, a great museum like Americans can make. Then, we have a walk in Central Park around the Lake (where turtles enjoy the sunny day) to Bethesda Fountain (this is not the marriage season yet therefore we don't see any bride being photographed, even so we still can see some couples being photographed by professionals ...) and to finish the statue of Alice in Wonderland (as usual with many children on it).

On va ensuite au Metropolitan Museum. Ce musée est immense, on décide de n’en faire qu’une petite partie, et on se dirige vers l’immense collection de peintures européennes. On voulait aussi faire un tour sur le Rooftop Café pour voir la superbe vue sur Midtown, mais la terrasse n’est pas encore ouverte pour la saison. C’est vrai que le temps est tellement exceptionnel qu’on en oublie que c'est seulement mi-avril… (La terrasse a ouvert depuis, Léo et AnneCha vous pouvez voir que cette année l’œuvre exposée est beaucoup mieux que l’année dernière ! )

Pour finir la journée on se dirige vers Little Italy pour déguster une délicieuse pizza dans la première pizzeria ouverte aux Etats-Unis : Lombardi’s Pizza.

Then we go to the Metropolitan Museum. This Museum is huge, we decide to visit just a few rooms and we head for the immense collection of European paintings. We also would have liked to go to the Rooftop Café to watch the superb view of Midtown, but the rooftop was not open for the season yet. With such an exceptional weather, we forget this is only mid April ... (The rooftop has opened since, Léo and Annecha you can see that this year the work of art that is exposed is a lot better than last year !) To end the day, we head towards Little Italy to enjoy a delicious pizza in the first pizzeria opened in the us : Lombardi's Pizza.

Le printemps est là, il est temps de ranger les pulls et de sortir un peu de chez nous ! Ce dimanche on est parti à Newport, à environ 1h30 de route de Boston. Pour rappel on y avait déjà fait un tour l’année dernière. Les villas des millionnaires des années 1900 sont toujours là. Aujourd’hui on décide de visiter Marble House. Comme son nom l’indique, cette maison est faite presque entièrement  de marbre (qui représente 7 millions $ pour un coût de construction total de 11millions …). D’extérieur elle est carrée et pas très originale, avec tout de même des colonnes impressionnantes. La visite de l’intérieur se fait avec un audioguide, qui nous explique que la maison a été construite pour Alva Vanderbilt, mariée à William Vanderbilt, un millionnaire new-yorkais. Comme les autres manoirs de Newport, il ne s’agit pas d’une résidence permanente, mais d’un ‘’ cottage ‘’ de vacances. Le couple n’en profite que trois étés avant de divorcer. Alva se remarie, et ne revient habiter à Marble House qu’après la mort de son second époux. Elle se consacre alors à la lutte pour le droit de vote des femmes, et reçoit de nombreux rallys dans sa demeure (on peut notamment voir des assiettes à l’effigie de ‘’Vote for Women’’ lors de la visite. On ne peut pas vous montrer de photos de l’intérieur. Pour une fois on a pu en prendre, mais on a dû s’engager à ne pas les diffuser. Tout est très richement décoré, on trouve une salle gothique avec une cheminée en pierre et des vitraux, une salle à manger avec du marbre rose importé d’Algérie, une chambre style Louis XIV… bref c’est grandeur et décadence ! Le jardin est une simple pelouse avec vue sur l’océan, et une maison de thé chinoise.

Spring is here, it is time to put our sweater away and to go outside our home ! This Sunday we went to Newport, which is about 1h30 drive from Boston. As a reminder we have already been there last year. The millionaire's villas built in the 1900's are still there. Today we decide to visit Marble House. As its name says,  this house is made almost entirely with marble (which represents $ 7 million for a total amount of $ 11 million ...). From outside, it is a square and not very original, but with impressive columns.  We visit the inside with an audio guide, which explains us how the mansion was built for Alva Vanderbilt, married to William Vanderbilt, a millionaire form New York City. Like the other Newport's Manors, this is not a permanent residence, but more a cottage for vacations. The couple enjoyed it only 3 summers before they divorced. Alva got married again, and came back to live in Marble House only after the death of her second husband. She devotes herself to the struggle for the women's voting right, and organizes many rallies in her mansion (we can especially see plates with the slogan "Vote for women" during the visit).  We can't show you pictures of the inside of the mansion. We could take pictures and we did it but we had to sign a paper and commit ourselves not to distribute them. The decoration is rich, there is a Gothic room with a stone fireplace and stained-glass windows, a dining room with pink marble imported from Algeria, a Louis XIV's style bedroom ... this is too much ! The garden is a simple lawn with ocean view and a Chinese tea house.

L’après-midi on décide de faire la Newport Cliff Walk, une balade entre l’océan et les manoirs. C’est très agréable, surtout sous le soleil ! 

The afternoon we decide to do the Newport Cliff Walk, a walk between the ocean and the manors. It's very nice, especially with the sun !
